Summer is here dolls, so unfortunately we cannot afford to look like werewolves anymore. For years and years it has been an obvious task for me to take care of hair removal myself, but for the first time ever in my life I decided to put myself in a professional’s hands and take one for the team, so I could tell you a little bit more about waxing. Lycon Precision Waxing to be exact!
Lycon Precision Waxing was founded by Lydia Jordane in Australia, which in this case makes the term ‘down under’ even more funny. Lydia is also known as the Queen of Waxing since she started her company back in 1978 and created an evolutionary product that quickly travelled all around the globe. Lycon offers a choice of Hot Wax, Strip Wax and it’s own Lycojet waxes, complemented by pre and post waxing lotions (which really smell heavenly) and aftercare products. The type of wax that is used depends on your skin type/condition and the area you want to get waxed.
Hollywood celebrities like Victoria Beckham have been going crazy for this elite type of waxing and since you obviously want attract as many David Beckhams as possible – to supposedly drink milkshakes in your yard – I’m here to tell you why Lycon is so in demand lately!
Benefits of Lycon Waxing
- Removes hair as short as 1 mm
- Provides comfortable treatment due to low temperatures
- Offers long results
- Removes hair virtually pain free
For my very first waxing experience I visited Schoonheidssalon Helen (schoonheidssalon means beauty salon in Dutch). Helen is the owner of her very own beauty salon in Lisserbroek. She has been a certified beautician for over 1o years and has a lot of experience with Lycon. A few years ago she was introduced with this high end waxing brand at a beauty fair and she fell completely in love with it. Helen now offers trainings for Smooth & Co (which is the official Dutch distributor of Lycon), but also provides a lot of other beauty treatments in her salon.
In the Netherlands there are many other beauty salons which offer Lycon waxing treatments, but Lisserbroek was the most convenient for me to visit, since I live in The Hague. For a list of salons which offer this waxing treatment, please click here.
So, here’s the part you’ve all been waiting for. When I booked an appointment with Helen, she asked me which part I wanted to get waxed. I didn’t want to go all out on the first time – and frankly I was almost crapping my pants when thinking of it – so I decided to do my legs. She told me that it would be better to not shave for at least 10 days, because that would give the best results. She also suggested that I should do my underarms. I wasn’t so sure about that.
A few days before I had my appointment it was almost 30 degrees Celsius outside. I was invited for a family barbeque and really could not show up wearing something that would completely cover up my legs considering the unbearable heat. Can you guess what happened next? I shaved my legs and put on a dress.
A few days after the barbeque I arrived at my appointment with Helen, I told her that I wasn’t sure if my hair was long enough to be waxed. We then both agreed to do my underarms instead. Yikes! A friend of mine who has been waxing like forever, warned me that having your genital parts or underarms waxed was the most painful thing EVER. Great, so here I was laying with my arms up, thinking that I was about to die.
Helen on the other hand assured me she would describe every single step in the process and that in fact, no one who has ever experienced Lycon waxing before has ever complained about pain during the treatment (or even after).
Helen started off the treatment by using a cleanser and by applying a pre-waxing oil right after that. The oil was used to create a barrier between the skin and the wax, which actually means; less pain and less irritated skin afterwards. After that she gently swiped a spatula through one of the 8 available hot waxes. Lycon has a wide assortment of yummy smelling hot waxes; such as chocolate, berries and even one that is especially created for men called Manifico. For me, Helen used LYCOflex Vanilla Hot Wax. It felt warm and soothing and had just the right temperature, not too hot and not too cold. She then applied it to my skin, rubbed it around, let it sit there for a little while and then pulled the patch off..
“Was that it?!” I said. “That wasn’t too bad at all.” It was nowhere near painful as I had expected. I could get used to this! The treatment continued with Rosette Pastel Hot Wax (a wax with rose and camomille ingredients for a calming feeling) to remove the hairs that didn’t attach to the first wax immediately. After that Helen used the Lycojet Lavender Wax for the real stubborn hairs. In some beauty salons they pull out the last hairs with a tweezer, but with Lycon – luckily – that isn’t part of the treatment. I can imagine that that would feel very unpleasant and that it would really really hurt.
The photos that were made during the treatment were overexposed, so unfortunately I have no visuals for you. However, I did find a video in which you can exactly see how Lycon waxing works.
I am really impressed with the outcome. After the treatment my skin felt as smooth as satin! Lycon also offers a wide range of after care products such as scrubs, soothing creams and soothing gels.
The waxing treatment that I got done costs 17 euros.
